My Weed Problem: The Parable of The Seeds

I have a weed problem. Like the kind that grow in your yard, not the other kind (I know what you were thinking Washingtonians). Or maybe it is a weed-picking problem. Either way, it is a problem. Some of the weeds in my yard and flower beds are so obnoxious and ugly, but some are actually quite pretty. They almost look like they belong. And no matter what they look like, man, can those things grow. They can grow in shade, sun, dirt, no dirt, ANYWHERE. And fast. I cannot keep up sometimes.

Do you see where I am going with this? I think you do. The Parable of the Sower is in Matthew 13. Jesus is teaching; giving different examples of what we can do when we hear the gospel. I am going to focus on the seed that was sown among thorns.

Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them…….As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. Mt 13:7, 22

There are so many weeds to be choked by. Just like the ones in my yard, some are pretty, some are not, but they ALL grow rampant if we let them. This week, let’s not allow the cares of this world to distract us from the one thing that matters; that seed sown un our hearts. Let us be like the seed sown in the good soil that flourishes.

Here is some scripture to get us through the week:

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. Galatians 5:16

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Colossians 3:1

Pray without ceasing. 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Lord, keep our eyes on you. Holy spirit, strengthen us as we face the weeds of the world this week. Give us discernment to know the things we should spend our time and energy on, and the things to reject. We choose you, Lord. transform our minds, give us a voracious appetite for your word and to see your kingdom advance. We cannot go on living a life apart from you. Ignite our souls. Change us.
